The Brain and Recovery: An Update on the Neuroscience of Addiction

Friday, April 21, 2017, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM

“The Brain and Recovery: An Update on the Neuroscience of Addiction” will be presented on Friday April 21, 2017; with a reception from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, the presentation from 2:30 pm to 2:00 pm and a question/answer period from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm. The program will be presented by Dr. Kevin T. McCauley, MD; co-founder of the Institute on Addiction Study; writer of the award-winning DVD “Pleasure Unwoven” and the DVD “Memo To Self.” The last twenty years produced an explosion of understanding not only about addiction (substance use disorders) but how our brains enable our most human capacities such as hedonic valuation and decision-making. This lecture summarizes the most current neuroscientific research about addiction - research that explains how the brain constructs pleasurable experiences, what happens when this process goes wrong, and why this can have a dramatic impact in our ability to make proper choices. This presentation is co-sponsored by Dawn Farm, a non-profit organization that provides a continuum of programs for treatment of substance use disorders; and the University of Michigan Collegiate Recovery Program, University of Michigan Students For Recovery, and University of Michigan Student Health Services/Wolverine Wellness. Anyone with a personal or professional interest is welcome. Registration is not required. The program provides 1.5 hours of free C.E. for addiction professionals. For information, please contact Dawn Farm at 734-485-8725 or info@dawnfarm.org, or see http://www.dawnfarm.org/programs/education-series.
